Gemma, Textiles Buyer

I’ve been a big fan of the brand since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. I had family in Oxfordshire, near the original Habitat store, so I went there as a child and I’ve been hooked ever since. Working at Habitat just seemed natural to me. I moved to London after I graduated and I started working at the Hammersmith branch in 1999. I was just a Sales Assistant when I started out, then a vacancy came up at the Head Office about a year and a half later and I moved into Purchasing.

"I’ve had amazing trips all over the world"

“Now I’m the Buyer for the Textiles Department, so I manage everything from bed linen to curtains – anything you can call soft furnishings really. We design our products in-house, then take them to our suppliers for the actual manufacturing. We’ve got nearly 30 suppliers in eight different countries, so I’ve had amazing trips all over the world. I’ve seen traditional production methods in rural India, high-tech manufacturing in Portugal, and everything in-between.

The products here are inspiring and always ahead of the high street. They’re what hooked me on Habitat when I was a child, and they’re what makes my role genuinely rewarding now. That’s why I love it when we present the new collection twice a year. You feel like you own each collection, so it’s really motivating and affirming when they’re approved.”
